Valerie is a Registered Midwife and one of the founders of Diversity Midwives. Originally she practiced midwifery in England. She completed a registered nursing program in 1975 prior to entering her midwifery training in 1976 and has practiced as a midwife since 1977 both in hospital and in the community in the U.K.

 

While completing her Prior Learning Experience and Assessment Process (PLEA) in Ontario, Valerie worked as an Obstetrical Nurse in a labour and delivery unit. Valerie completed her PLEA with the College of Midwives of Ontario in 1998. Valerie has worked as a midwife in the Scarborough area since 1999 and is one of the founders of Diversity Midwives.

Laurie is a Registered Midwife and one of the founders of Diversity Midwives. She graduated from the Midwifery Education Program at McMaster University (1999) with a Bachelor of Health Science in Midwifery.

 

Laurie is also a Registered Nurse (1995) with a certificate in Obstetrical Nursing (1996). Laurie has been providing midwifery care in the Scarborough area since October 1999.

Mehrnaz is a Registered Midwife and obtained her Bachelor of Science in Midwifery at Mashhad University in Iran. She has worked as a midwife since 1989 serving a very diverse clientele in rural and urban communities in Iran.

 

In January 2002, Mehrnaz completed the College of Midwives of Ontario, Prior Learning Experience and Assessment Process (PLEA). In June 2002, she joined Diversity Midwives.

 

Mehrnaz speaks English, Farsi, French and some Turkish.

Tama is a Registered Midwife and graduated from the Midwifery Education Program at McMaster University (1999) with a Bachelor of Health Science in Midwifery. Tama is also the Midwifery Department Head at Scarborough Health Network.

She practiced with the Midwives Grey - Simcoe and provided midwifery care to clients living in Barrie, Stayner, and Owen Sound and surrounding areas until 2003. Prior to joining Diversity Midwives in 2004, Tama returned from a nine-month overseas midwife position with Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders), working in both Sierra Leone and Burundi. Tama also speaks French.

Mojgan is a Registered Midwife and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Midwifery at Shahid Beheshti University (Tehran) in Iran.

She has had almost 8 years of experience both in the labour room and prenatal clinic. Mojgan completed the International Midwifery Pre- Registration Program (IMPP) through Ryerson University in July 2012 and joined Diversity Midwives in October 2012. She speaks English and Farsi.

Alexandra is a Registered Midwife who graduated from the Midwifery Education Program at McMaster University (2012) with an Honors Bachelor of Health Science in Midwifery.

Alexandra was a student at Diversity Midwives in 2009 and was thrilled to return to the practice on October 1, 2013, after having spent her first year as a midwife at another Toronto practice. She has always been interested in the world of midwifery, interest that was solidified with the birth of her daughter in the Netherlands. In addition to English, Alex speaks Romanian, Dutch and Greek.

Sanaz joined Diversity Midwives in November 2014 as a New Registrant. Sanaz was a student midwife in the Durham region and is thrilled to join Diversity Midwives where she received excellent maternity care through all three of her own pregnancies.

 

Her interest in Midwifery was sparked by a desire for a more meaningful career involving community services and advocacy for women’s health. Sanaz also speaks Italian and Farsi.

Maryam received her Bachelor degree in Midwifery and graduated with honors in 1998. She started her practice in a rural birth center. Soon after, she worked as midwife/preceptor in a tertiary maternity hospital and conducted more than 1000 normal vaginal deliveries while leading / supervising 400 midwifery students in their clinical journey. She has completed the International Midwifery Pre-registration Program (IMPP) at Ryerson University in 2014 and served as a certified midwife in Scarborough and Durham region. Since then, she has worked with a diverse group of women in Scarborough, conducted/attended over 500 births, and managed a variety of clinical situations. Maryam is also a certified Hypno-Birth Practitioner and can help to ease your labor and delivery.

She joined Diversity Midwives in January 2019 and feels blessed and honored to participate at your births.

MARYAM RAHIMI-CHATRI

Kirsten graduated from the Midwifery Education Program at Ryerson in 2018 after 20+ years of experience working in community health and hospice - particularly with people who experience social marginalization because of homelessness, poverty, substance use, HIV, LGBTQ, youth, and Indigenous people.

 

She also has a Masters degree in Health Promtion. As a Queer person, Kirsten is passionate about making heath systems accessible and supportive to all kinds of families. She considers pregnancy an amazing opportunity for personal transformation and growth, and looks at pregnancy holistically considering mental, physical, social, and spiritual wellness. Kirsten lives with her partner, one bio-child (born with a midwife!) and two adopted-kids from CAS - all who are now teens. When she is not working, she enjoys yoga, meditation, eating fabulous food, and being with her family and friends.

Melanie is a Registered Midwife and a recent graduate of the Midwifery Education Program at Ryerson University (2019) with a Bachelor of Health Science in Midwifery

 

Melanie also holds a Master’s Degree in social work from the University of California, Los Angeles.  Prior to midwifery, she worked in a variety of children’s mental health settings as a child and family therapist.  She has extensive mental health crisis management experience, as well as skills in mental health assessment, individual and family therapy, and case management. Consequently, she has a strong interest in the area of perinatal mental health.

MELANIE MAHRT-SMITH

Zoe is a Registered Midwife and a recent graduate of the Midwifery Education Program at Ryerson University (2019) with a Bachelor of Health Science in Midwifery

 

Zoe also holds a Master’s Degree in public health from the University of Toronto.  Prior to midwifery, she worked as a public health nurse for 18 years.  She has extensive experience in early parenting, childhood development and mental health. Zoe has also been an internationally licensed lactation consultant for 10 years. In her free time she raises chickens and lives with her partner and three children who were born with midwives.

Laurie is also a Registered Nurse (1995) with a certificate in Obstetrical Nursing (1996). Laurie has been providing midwifery care in the Scarborough area since October 1999.

Tenisha is a Registered Midwife. She attained an honours Bachelor of Health Sciences in Midwifery from the Midwifery Education Program at Ryerson University in 2013.

Tenisha completed her new registrant year with Diversity Midwives and is happy to be working in the Scarborough community. She joined the practice in October 2013.

Amanda is a Registered Midwife. She obtained a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Midwifery from Ryerson University in 2011.

Amanda was a student at Diversity Midwives in 2010 and is thrilled to be returning to the practice after completing her New Registrant year at Midwifery Care-North Don River Valley. She joined Diversity Midwives in October 2012.
